Homework Help & ELH Projects
Information for prospective clients and referring agencies
Student Community Action (SCA) is a well-established independent registered charity set up to encourage students attending the University in Cambridge to take part in voluntary work to benefit the Cambridge community. We have been registered with the Charity Commission since 1972.
Homework Help and English Language Help (ELH) projects
These projects aim to provide a volunteer tutor for children and adults who need support in learning English or completing their school assignments.
The client needs to fall into one of the following categories:
- Have difficulties using the English language: reading, writing or communicating.
- Have a disability that affects their studies such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, delayed development, autistic spectrum
- Is significantly falling behind their peers, or is failing a subject.
- Their parents are unable to support them due to language barrier or other factors.
These projects are NOT designed to be treated as a tutoring service for children who are coping well at school.
The family should live within biking distance (4 miles) of central Cambridge. Volunteers commit to 1 hour of contact time per week per family during term time.
WHO ARE THE VOLUNTEER TUTORS?
The volunteers are students from Cambridge University or Anglia Ruskin University aged 18 years upwards. We obtain at least one satisfactory reference and a police record check certificate (DBS) for all of our volunteers.
Before the volunteer is matched with a client, an SCA staff member will make sure they feel confident in being a tutor and are comfortable with any special needs the client may have. All our Volunteers complete a safeguarding training session and also some have had Teaching English as a second Language sessions that we offer also.
In English Language help our volunteers will help to improve the persons English by way of conversational, as well as assisting with some homework if required.
